I recently had a detached retina and had to undergo emergency surgery. While I tried to stay positive the 24 hours I had to research the surgery I was about to undergo, it had me a bit worried. As I write this, I still have little to no vision in my left eye. But I am 6 days into the recovery process and should begin having more clear vision any day now.

During these last 6 days I have been limited to my normal activity. No work, no reading, no writing, no walks, etc. My days were limited to the first 24 hours face down with a 15 minute break every hour. The remaining five days was to be spent on my right side, with my eye shoulder level, with breaks every 15 minutes on the hour to use the bathroom, or eat.

Needless to say with so much downtime I wasn’t used to, I had time to think, or should I say ruminate? It doesn’t help I am newly sober, at 22 days today. My sobriety couldn’t have came at a better time. Because if it wasn’t for this choice I made to quit drinking, I likely would have ignored all the symptoms of the torn, and detached retina and lost my vision. Doctors are a “no go” when I was drinking, but I am beginning to schedule the appointments I have avoided for years.
