I believe Narcissists spend a great deal of time planning their activities and forms of delusion they need to uphold for an image that doesn’t exist, especially the more Covert Narcissist. Coverts are the type that goes from deflation to elation with their emotions. They are constantly chasing the supply they need but once achieved, they lose it just as quickly. This is why the Covert Narcissist can appear vulnerable, apologize, and sometimes cry.
The Covert’s ability to show vulnerability is what keeps the victim in a constant state of confusion and self-doubt. Coverts are great at pulling out all the stops when they feel they are losing control in the relationship.
