Cincinnati, Ohio is Home to The Largest Unused Subway System in The World
And there are no plans to finish the project that started back in the early 1900's.
The Cincinnati Subway was a Transit system partially finished below Cincinnati, Ohio. The total length of the system was about 2.2 miles, but it still makes up the largest abandon subway tunnel in the United States. The construction began in the early 1900’s to upgrade the Cincinnati streetcar system. It was eventually stalled due to escalating expenses, the collapse of funding amidst political indifference, and the Great Depression during the 1920s and 1930s.
The construction of the Cincinnati Subway System was eventually cancelled in 1928. There are no plans as of now to restart the project.
During the first quarter of the 20th century rapid transit was viewed as the solution to downtown traffic. Six million dollars were allocated for the project, but World War I delayed the construction. In addition, unexpected post-war inflation doubled the construction cost, so the project could not be finished at the original estimated price.
