Hey, Medium. It’s time. Dinosaurs are Extinct
The dinosaur business model is no longer working.
I’ve been a Medium writer for over a year now, 16 months to be exact. I started writing across the street on Quora in 2019 and was looking for ways to generate income from writing. At the time, Quora didn’t offer a monetization program, but they do now. But it’s nothing to get excited about.
The start
When I started on Medium, I did “Ok” in my opinion. My first month was .16, then the second month was $16. It has been quite the roller coaster from my second month until now. My earnings will bounce from $350-$1300 a month, and I have no control over that for the most part. Some days I can post 2–3 articles and get 100 reads; others, I publish nothing and get 400 reads. There is definitely no consistency as a writer on Medium; at least, for me, there isn’t.
I believe the whole charging-to-read bullshit has jumped the shark. We have a 3–1 ratio of writers to readers, but that might be a low estimate. I don’t know about you, but how exhausting is it to feel the “need” to read other writers because you want your shit to be read too? Talk about a failed business model. And the crazy shit is most articles on Medium teeter around the same topics, fear/drama, addiction, writing, how to make money, or life…
