How do You Deal With The Consequences of Your Past After Addiction?
One thing you don’t want to do is try and forget it and act as if nothing happened.
Well, for one I’m not going to minimize, justify or try and forget it. I’m going to revisit those consequences often so I can be reminded of what I never want to return to again.
And how I’m going to do that is by letting go of the version of myself who created, and made choices that led to the consequences of the past that cause me shame, regret and embarrassment.
The person I was when I was drinking is not the person I am today, nor will it be the person I am in months to come. That person was a version of myself I had to create to fight the battle that was happening in that time of life.
It’s how I coped.
I wasn’t aware there was something more to the reason “why” I was drinking.
The longer you are sober the more clarity you will gain on your past. And the more you go into your past the more you learn and understand why you were doing what you were doing.
Learning from your past and taking the appropriate actions to change is what will get you through it. Never forgetting where you came from, all while you put more focus on where you are going.
Staying stuck in the past will lead you right back to the addiction you are trying to heal.
Make amends with it and move on. But don’t forget to glance in the rear view at times for a reminder of where you never want to visit again.
