Listen, there is a simple answer to this.
The minute you know you deserve better, it changes. You may not make a clean break from the asshole, but they will sense it.
They felt your feelings before you EVER felt anything. They knew how to hook you.
The next step? When you speak the truth. But maybe not at first, because they always let the “truth” slide a few times, perhaps MANY! It depends on how much abuse and delusion you willingly put up with in the trauma-bonded relationship phase.
When they stop hoovering you, good job, kid! It might not feel like you accomplished much, but you have!
You just cursed the devil at their own game.
You are free to pursue something they aren’t capable of.; True love.
And it doesn’t have to be with someone else; it might just be you. But at least you are free from the abuse.
